CPHS Seminar: Asthma: from diagnosis to control in partnership with patients

Asthma diagnosis can be tricky and mis-diagnosis is common. Luke will discuss how a future clinical decision support system for asthma diagnosis could improve diagnostic accuracy and in a novel approach engage patients in the diagnostic process. The point of diagnosis can also be considered a ‘window of opportunity’ for health professionals to support the establishment of effective patient self-management. Hilary will then discuss the challenges face in implementing supported self-management for asthma in primary care, and how the IMP2ART programme of work is providing solutions.

Speakers

Speaker: Dr Luke Daines

Bio: Dr Luke Daines is a GP and CSO Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He is a member of the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research, currently working toward a PhD centred on the diagnosis of asthma in primary care. Luke serves on the BTS/SIGN asthma guideline development group, the UK national asthma audit steering group and teaches on Edinburgh University's undergraduate medical curriculum.

Speaker: Professor Hilary Pinnock

Bio: Hilary Pinnock is Professor of Primary Care Respiratory Medicine, University of Edinburgh, and a GP in Whitstable, Kent. Her research interests focus on delivery of care including implementing supported self-management for asthma, telehealthcare for monitoring respiratory disease, and supportive care for people with severe COPD. She is actively involved with the European Respiratory Society, the International Primary Care Respiratory Group, the Primary Care Respiratory Society and the BTS/SIGN asthma guideline.
